There is a lot of confusion regarding being filled with the Holy Spirit and talking in tongues. I recently heard a good sermon on this subject, I pray you gain spiritual wisdom from this page and be strengthened in Jesus. First of all, I want to make it perfectly clear that if you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and
Saviour, then you have the Holy Spirit in you. 1 Cor 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 1 Cor 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and [that] the Spirit of God dwells in you?
The Bible says in the book of Jude verse 20-21 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. This tells us that praying in the Holy Spirit does two specific things for us, we build up our faith and we keep ourselves in the love of God.
1 Cor 14:1-5 Pursue love, and desire spiritual [gifts,] but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands [him;] however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies [is] greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.
The Dictionary defines the word edification as: instruction or enlightenment, especially when it is morally or spiritually uplifting
In other words, you build yourself up and increase in enlightenment or wisdom when you speak in tongues. Isn't that what we just read in the book of Jude? We speak in tongues and our spirit is built up, however, we don't understand what we're saying (neither does Satan, by the way). We are speaking mysteries. We need to do this and take it one step further as we grow in Christ. Verses 13-15 expand on the concept;
Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is [the conclusion] then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
We need to Pray in tongues and also pray for the interpretation of them. We need to move the enlightenment from our spirit up to our soul realm where we can increase in the understanding. Your Spirit is one-third of you and it requires exercise just like the other two-thirds of you to become efficient. When you want to grow strong in your body, you exercise, lift weights, workout and stretch your muscles. When you want to grow strong in your
mind(soul), you exercise, study, memorize, think and learn and stretch your mental muscles. Now, you want to grow strong in your spirit. Any ideas on how to do this????? Pray in the Spirit. Remember, that's how to build yourself up.
I've spoken to a lot of people who say that they simply don't have that gift from God and they point to the reference in 1 Cor 12:30 where Paul asks, "Do all speak with tongues?". I submit to you that there is no partiality with God(Romans 2:11), in 1 Cor 12:13 Paul specifically states that we were all baptized into one body and have been made to drink into one Spirit.
My feeling on this is that not everyone will accept the gifts that the Holy Spirit has. This does not simply apply to the gift of tongues. There are many places in the Bible that speak on divine health and the gifts of healing and many in the body of Christ have not believed that they "qualify" for this gift. I believe all this falls to the point of
"you believe, then you receive", otherwise, what did Jesus mean when
He said "all things are possible to him who believes"(Mark
Another benefit of praying in the Spirit is the protection He gives us. See
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our
weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the
Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
There are many times in our lives when we don't know how to pray, what to say,
because we don't know what we should be preparing against. We don't know what is
about to come up against us, but when we pray in the Spirit, He provides
intercession for us so that we can build up our faith to overcome the wiles of
One benefit that I heard one time from Jesse Duplantis on praying in tongues is
that Satan does not know what you are saying when you pray. You are speaking
directly to God and speaking mysteries and the demons around you that are taking
notes can't do anything to plan against you when they don't know what you are
praying for. When you pray in plain language for something, those demons hear
what you are praying for just as plainly as God and they immediately start
making their plans to stifle your faith so that you can't receive what you are
As you have received the promise of God, that is the Holy Spirit who is your
guarantee of your salvation, Learn to pray in the Spirit and increase in Grace
and improve your weaponry against the devil. When Jesus gave the command to
"Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every
creature" in Mark 16, one of the signs that he mentioned WILL follow
those who believe, that they will speak with new tongues.
I believe that people who fight against this gift are thinking only of the
physical realm where they think that they sound foolish and talking in
gibberish. Keep this in mind....The weapons of our warfare are NOT
carnal...besides, what do you care if you sound a little foolish if the result
is growth spiritually which will be evidenced in you. This is a sign for the
unbeliever and is part of the ministry of every believer of Christ. Have faith
in God and what He tells you in His word and quit listening to your flesh.
If you don't know how to speak in tongues and you want to begin, Ask. Ask the
Lord for this gift and remember the verse in 1 John 5:14-15
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything
according to His will, He hears us.
15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the
petitions that we have asked of Him.
Pray that the Lord grant to you the gift of tongues, believe you have received
it and then exercise your faith...open your mouth and begin speaking in your
Holy language. Praise the Lord!
